Feb. 1, 2021—The criminal investigation into the United Auto Workers ended Friday following a federal judge’s decision to sign off on a deal reached by the union and the U.S. Attorney’s office, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Fifteen people, including two ex-UAW presidents and the onetime lead labor negotiator for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, were convicted in the years-long corruption probe that uncovered millions of dollars in misused worker training money and union dues, kickbacks and fraudulent expense filings.
The agreement sets a series of deadlines that the UAW must comply with. Among them is the requirement to appoint an independent monitor who, along with a court-appointed adjudications officer, will have oversight over the union’s actions.
