Proposed Jiffy Lube in Reno, Nevada, Prompts Protests From Locals
A proposed Jiffy Lube in Reno, Nevada, is facing a significant amount of backlash, with residents even organizing a protest, prompting the developers behind it to host a Q&A session with locals.
KTVN 2 News reports that the Ward Two Neighborhood Advisory Board meeting held this past Tuesday ran for nearly three hours due to the overwhelming public feedback.
Real estate developer Terra Form Companies had filed for a minor conditional use permit months ago to build the Jiffy Lube on the southwest corner of Hunter Lake Drive and Mayberry Drive, and is now looking to purchase the lot.
Locals’ concerns with the development include its impact on local traffic congestion, and how that may impact the area’s walkability. Others also cited concerns with the facility’s environmental impact.
“Most of the concerns in the neighborhood are about safety because this development does occur in a school zone on a fairly congested intersection that a lot of students use daily to walk to Hunter Lake Elementary School and Swope Middle school,” told one resident, Dan Harmon.
Developers looking to work on the new Jiffy Lube were at the Advisory Board meeting, and held a Q&A session to address some residents’ concerns.
Terra Form Companies managing partner Elliot Smith said that the proposed store will be smaller than typical Jiffy Lubes, which will translate to less business capacity and congestion. Smith added that an environmental specialist inspected the lot and determined it safe to operate out of.
City staff will now review the proposal and determine whether a permit will be granted, with a decision likely to be made in a week or two. In the meantime, locals organized a protest of the project that took place in front of the lot on Wednesday evening.
