Foam Shortage Could Cause Auto Manufacturer Delays

This new foam seat shortage could be “bigger and closer than the semiconductor issue."

March 9, 2021—Semiconductors have caused manufacturers to shut down assembly plants throughout the country. Now a new problem could make it worse, Car and Driver reported.

The new issue stems from the strong winter storms Texas experienced in February that caused power outages. Those outages stopped local petrochemical plants from operating, which is having a domino effect on the foam required to make new vehicle seats.

This new foam seat shortage could be “bigger and closer than the semiconductor issue,” the report said, detailing that it could alter production schedules as soon as this week.
