Nov. 25, 2019—Indiana-based Biosynthetic Technologies has announced an engine oil derived from high-oleic soybean oil.
Hoosier Ag Today reports that soybean farmers could now look toward the motor oil market for demand.
“If you’re using petroleum in something, this is a potential replacement for that petroleum," Biosynthetic executive vice president Jake Bredsguard said in the story. "So, this is a much bigger story than just the motor oil, but the motor oil itself is one of the more difficult standards to meet.”
Oleic is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid, which apparently helps make the soybean oil a base stock for the engine oil. The company has released 5W-20 and 5W-30 grades. Information from the American Petroleum Institute shows that the products meet API SN and ILSAC GF-5 standards.
The company is also looking to develop hydraulic fluids with its technology.
