Plans for Valvoline Instant Oil Change in Charlotte, North Carolina, Meet Backlash

A proposed Valvoline Instant Oil Change in Charlotte, North Carolina, is meeting pushback due to its potential conflicts with the area’s infrastructure, reports WBTV.

The store, planned for a vacant lot at the corner of Matheson Avenue and The Plaza, has prompted a petition against its development that has garnered signatures from over 850 people as of Feb. 7.

The lot it’s proposed for is situated between ongoing projects to reduce the number of lanes, in order for expanded sidewalks and bike lanes. Residents’ concerns with the proposed Valvoline lie with the impacts it may have on traffic congestion and walkability.

Neighborhood leaders have been in contact with the Charlotte City Council for over a year now, discussing their thoughts on the project. Phillip Gussman, a leader of the Plaza Midwood Land Use Group, showed WBTV a layout of the existing lot, and highlighted where developers are planning to add a new exit from the business that would cross over a sidewalk and potential bike lane.

“We don’t think having cars moving through here is going to be the best for increasing walkability,” explained Gussman.

Residents have urged city leaders to fill the spot with a locally based restaurant, shop, or other pedestrian-friendly business, arguing that the neighborhood already has options for auto services.

“We already have plenty of local auto shops along this road. We don’t see the need for a big national chain to come in and potentially run them out of business,” Gussman added.

The city of Charlotte has said plans for the Valvoline are still under review.
