Twice-Rejected Take 5 Facility Plans in Florida Back on Table

Jan. 16, 2025
Developers and Sarasota County officials have reached an understanding that could allow a modified proposal to be sent back to the county commission.

Plans for a proposed Take 5 Oil Change in Osprey, Florida, that were twice rejected by Sarasota County officials could be revived again after developers and county legal counsel engaged in a session with a special magistrate on Tuesday, according to a report by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Previously, the Take 5 facility proposed by Cougar Investment Management and 8Square LLC were voted down by the Sarasota County Planning Commission and the Sarasota County Commission amid objections voiced by residents, according to the Herald-Tribune.

The developers had applied to rezone a 1.4 acre site from commercial shopping to commercial general, which would pave the way for the construction of an office building and service center. Residents of a nearby neighborhood argued the project would have a negative impact on the unique habitat of an adjacent state park. The plan was rejected by the county commission in August.

However, on Tuesday, an understanding was reached by the project developers and county legal counsel during the special session. A modified version of the Take 5 project proposal that includes limited store signage and walls to surround the store could now go back to the county commission for a revote.
