Cybertruck Owner Discovers Oil Leak From Vehicle’s Rear Motor Housing
A Cybertruck owner in Michigan was recently met with an interesting problem: an oil leak from his electric truck.
According to Torque News, the vehicle owner, Joey Arrowood, shared his experience on a Tesla Cybertruck group on Facebook. Though the vehicle has been driven just under 9,000 miles and has seen little off-roading, Arrowood found a pool of oil underneath the vehicle one day.
Pictures Arrowood provided show oil leaking out of a small hole on the rear motor casing. Though initially surprising, it’s a common misconception that EVs require no fluids to operate. The Cybertruck has oil to lubricate its motors as they rotate.
After a visit to a Tesla service center in Clarkston, Michigan, Arrowood discovered a small rock had been managed to get stuck between the rear subframe and gearbox, wearing a small hole in the aluminum case of the rear motor housing.
The service center determined the entire rear drive unit would need to be replaced for a cost of $7,660.55, and would not repair it unless Arrowood paid for it or filed an insurance claim.
Others in the Facebook group suggested Arrowood have the rear motor housing welded and the oil topped off to remedy the issue, but the Cybertruck owner responded that no welder would likely attempt to work on his vehicle.
“I find it absurd to comprehend that such a small rock can cause this kind of damage,” wrote Arrowood.
