Young Technician’s Death Leads Family to Help Others Pursuing Automotive Careers

Sept. 5, 2024
Following a fatal motorcycle crash, Nathan Young's family honors his memory by supporting other automotive students in his name.

Two years after the death of a young automotive technician in Kentucky, his family is now helping others to enter the industry in his memory, reports WAVE 3 News.

Nathan Young was a 20-year-old technician, who after graduating from Southern High School’s automotive academy, went on to start a career as a tech at Barnes Auto Service in Louisville, Kentucky.

Young had a passion for working with vehicles from a young age, encouraged by his father and older brother, Sean Young.

“I grew up being around cars. There’s probably photos of me at two months old in old cars and having fun. Nathan was the same way,” recounted Sean.

Young lost his life following a fatal motorcycle crash on Aug. 30, 2022. In honor of his life, his family started the Nathan Young Foundation Award, which provides Southern High School seniors looking to join the auto industry with toolboxes, full of tools they’ll need.

The toolboxes are gained through funds raised by the Nathan Young - Never Say Goodbye Car Show, held annually around the anniversary of Young’s death. Each toolbox comes with $1,200 to $1,500 worth of tools.

“Obviously, you have the sadness of him passing away, but then I’m also looking forward to putting on the car show for him so he can look from heaven and be like, ‘Man, this guy–they’re doing something great for me and the school,’” shared Sean.
