Nissan Issues “Do Not Drive” Warning for Older Vehicles Over Takata Airbag Injuries

The warning was prompted by reports of 58 injured and one individual dying due to airbag inflator-related ruptures.

Nissan has issued a “do not drive” warning for over 80,000 older vehicles over Takata airbags, following reports of more injuries and one fatality, reports USA Today.

The automaker made the announcement yesterday, telling drivers of 2002-2006 Nissan Sentras, 2002-2004 Nissan Pathfinders, and 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4s to immediately cease driving and to contact their local dealer. A total of 83,920 Nissan vehicles are included in the warning.

According to Nissan’s Director of Product Communications, Dominic Vizor, the warning was prompted by reports of 58 injured and one individual dying due to airbag inflator-related ruptures.

The vehicles had already been listed by the NHTSA as being recalled for Takata airbags prior to yesterday’s “do not drive” warning. The agency has noted that older vehicle models with Takata airbags can be especially dangerous for passengers.

“Nissan’s do not drive warning is the most recent effort in an extensive, multiyear campaign to communicate the risk of driving vehicles with defective Takata inflators and urge drivers to complete the free recall repair,” Vizor stated.
