Leaking Transmission Oil Prompts BMW Recall

Dec. 19, 2023
Improper welding in the transmission control unit of 10 different models could lead to fluid leaking and transmission gears seizing.

BMW’s latest recall is related to issues with automatic transmissions leaking oil, Kelley Blue Book reports.

The recall applies to a total of 552 cars and covers 10 different 2023 models, including the BMW 4 Series; BMW 5 Series; BMW 8 Series; BMW X3; BMW X4; BMW X5; BMW X6; BMW Z4; and the Toyota GR Supra, which is based on and built in the same factory as the BMW Z4.

A transmission supplier alerted BMW that two halves of the housing for the transmission control unit may not be correctly welded. This can lead to transmission oil entering the unit and making contact with electrical components, creating a risk of the transmission gears seizing.

No accidents or injuries have occurred as a result of the defect. To address the problem, dealers will replace the transmission mechatronics module and automatic transmission fluid as needed.
