Senator Seeks End to Annual Pennsylvania Vehicle Inspections

Sept. 11, 2023
A senator in Pennsylvania has proposed legislation to end annual vehicle safety inspections in the state.

Democratic Senator Marty Flynn has proposed legislation that would end annual vehicle safety inspections for Pennsylvania drivers, according to WPXI-TV 11 News.

The proposed legislation would mean drivers wouldn't need to get the inspection conducted every year; only when the vehicle is sold or if the title is transferred.

Flynn argues that the current annual requirement is costly and not needed.  According to WPXI-TV 11 News, Flynn says the inspections are “an inconvenience to vehicle owners and their wallets.”

But there is some pushback. Mike Tevis is the operations manager with Tevis Auto Service in Ross Township. He told  WPXI-TV 11 News that vehicle inspections keep drivers safe, and his shop has found many critical problems during the process.

Tevis also said that eliminating the annual inspection will impact small businesses financially and drivers would feel it too. Without the inspection, drivers could be forking out more money for expensive repairs further down the line instead of catching problems earlier.

Flynn's proposal also includes a new $15 registration fee for drivers to supply money directly to the state.
