More than 300 single mothers got free oil changes and free car washes and vacuums during the Single Mom Saturday event hosted by WGBL radio out of Champaign.
The station partners with oil shops and car dealerships and like businesses to provide the service for free, said Jerilynn Jones, a volunteer coordinator. The service providers provide the man-hours, oil and space, on their own. This is its 15th year of providing Single Mom Saturday.
Some 321 single moms were treated on Saturday. In Southern Illinois, Carbondale's Fast Lane Express serviced vehicles of six single moms, in Du Quoin, David Luthy Automotive serviced vehicles for nine moms, and Centralia's Monken Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Nissan, helped 6 moms. One of the day's highest services came from Decatur's Bob Brady Dodge, which serviced vehicles of 34 moms.
"It's just a great way to show God's love to the community … to show God's love in a tangible way … and show them that they're not alone," Jones said.
