Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers Location Approved in Kansas, Despite Concerns Over Traffic
An Express Oil Change and Tire Engineers store has received approval in Overland Park, Kansas; despite some concerns from city officials, reports Johnson County Post.
Following a unanimous recommendation for approval from the Overland Park Planning Commission, revised preliminary site plans for the new store were approved in a 9-4 vote by the Overland Park City Council. Mayor Curt Skoog cast an extra affirmative vote.
Operated by Autosoak LLC, the Express Oil Change is set to be located on 159th Street, northwest of the high-traffic U.S. Highway 69 interchange. The single-story, L-shaped facility will be 6,000 square feet, with three bay doors for oil changes and five for other auto services.
East of the building, a car wash—also operated by Autosoak LLC—has received approval as well, and will co-locate with the Express Oil Change. Both of the businesses will have to be accessed through a new right turn lane that will be added to 159th Street at the developer’s expense.
Those who dissented—councilmembers Chris Newlin, Jeff Cox, Richard Borlaza, and Council President Logan Heley—cited concerns with the business creating too much traffic in what’s already a busy area.
“I’m nervous that we could have accidents with a quick right-right turn, and I don’t think this is a right fit for development anyway,” explained Newlin. “I just don’t see this as being a good fit for where it is.”
