Over 42K Toyota Hybrids at Risk of Inadequate Brake-Fluid Pressure

A software defect may lead to inadequate brake-fluid pressure being applied when the brake pedal is pressed while turning a corner.

A software defect causing inadequate brake-fluid pressure has led to a recall of over 42,000 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid crossovers, according to Green Car Reports.

Specifically, the recall includes 42,199 of certain Corolla Cross Hybrids from model years 2023 and 2024.

A software defect may lead to inadequate brake-fluid pressure being applied when the brake pedal is pressed while turning a corner, resulting in the power-brake assist to cut out and longer stopping distances. Drivers may also notice the pedal feeling harder to press.

The software in question is for the skid-control units, which control friction and regenerative braking, and is housed within a control unit manufactured by Bosch. Toyota shared that some of its other models contain actuators from the same supplier using similar software, but is unaware of if they are affected by this problem.

Toyota has estimated that the entirety of recalled vehicles are impacted by the issue, and has instructed dealers to update the skid-control unit software. Letters to owners will start being mailed Nov. 5.
