Loss of Power Brake Assist in 42K Toyotas, and More; Recall Roundup

Sept. 30, 2024
Overheating engines, dangerous airbags, and increased braking distance are some of the risks that lead to three separate recalls last week.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced multiple recalls last week impacting Toyota, Mercedes-Benz USA, and Mazda vehicles, reports Reuters.

Toyota's Loss of Power Brake Assist

Toyota Motor Corp recalled more than 42,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a loss of power brake assist. Vehicles covered by this recall are certain 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrids.

NHTSA had flagged a software error found within the electronic control unit that manages a vehicle when it skids. The error made a vehicle prone to losing braking assistance when turning a corner, which could increase stopping distance and cause a crash.

Risk of Mercedes Engines Overheating, Stalling

Over 27,000 vehicles were recalled by Mercedes-Benz USA over risks of the engine overheating or stalling.

The recall includes certain 2021-2023 Mercedes and Maybach S580 luxury sedans. An issue with the engine control unit software is reportedly what’s behind the engine trouble.

Dealers will be instructed to update the engine control unit software to remedy the issue.

Airbag Danger in Over 77K Mazdas

The largest of the three recalls issued, Mazda issued one for 77,670 vehicles, citing a danger posed by the airbags.

Vehicles included in the recall are certain 2016-2023 MX-5 Miatas.

NHTSA elaborated that a software bug is causing the airbags in these vehicles to deploy with excessive force. Parent company Stellantis issued a recall on a little over 15,000 of its Fiat 124 Spider models for the same problem last week, as well.

To resolve the issue, dealers will update the airbag sensor control module software.
