General Motors Recalls Nearly 450K Vehicles for Faulty Brake Fluid Indicator Light

Sept. 23, 2024
An update to remedy the issue may be done by a dealer, or through an over-the-air update.

A failure to detect low brake fluid has led to a recall of nearly 450,000 pickups and SUVs from General Motors, reports Detroit Free Press.

The recall covers the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, and the 2023 and 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV large SUVs.

GM was first made aware of the issue on April 18, when one of its engineers noticed no indicator lights coming on during a forced brake fluid leak test.

The company opened a product investigation on April 30, which found that a mismatch between the electronic brake control module software and electronic brake control module calibrations was leading to the system failing to detect low brake fluid.

Impacted vehicles will still meet stopping distance requirements and may be driven with low brake fluid, but drivers are urged to remedy the issue to avoid a reduction in brake performance and increased risk of crash.

Dealers were made aware of the recall Sept. 12. To remedy the issue, the electronic brake control module software will be updated. Drivers may visit a dealer or have an over-the-air update done.
