A large recall from BMW over braking issues is having an impact on the automaker’s financial targets for the year, reports the Associated Press.
Following an internal quality check that discovered an issue with the vehicle’s integrated braking system, the automaker issued a recall for over 1.5 million vehicles globally. Continental AG is a German auto supplier that confirmed it produced the integrated brake system for BMW.
The recall impacts 270,000 vehicles in the U.S. that were produced between June 2022 and August 2024, including certain BMW X models, the 5 and 7 Series, Rolls-Royce Spectre, MINI Cooper, and Countryman.
In response, BMW has developed a diagnostic software that will detect a brake fault before it occurs, which will instruct a driver to seek service and will engage a “safe mode” to ensure the brakes function.
Now, BMW has cited the recall fix as the reason behind its lower expectations for sales and earnings in fiscal year 2024, saying it has cost the company “a high three-digit million (euro) amount.”
