Survey: Rising Costs Pushing Americans Toward Professional Vehicle Maintenance

Aug. 14, 2024
Conducted on behalf of Pennzoil, the survey found that over half of drivers are prioritizing maintenance to extend their vehicle's lifespan.

A recent survey showed that rising prices are driving more vehicle owners to seek out preventative maintenance to preserve their existing vehicles, according to Study Finds.

The random, double-opt-in survey–conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Pennzoil–is based on responses gained from 2,000 vehicle owners between May 24 and May 29.

Of those surveyed, 73% said they have made a deliberate effort to improve the maintenance of their vehicles as a result of rising costs. When looking at age demographics, 75% of those in Gen X agreed with this sentiment, compared to 60% of Gen Z drivers.

In addition, 80% of respondents said that they rely on others to perform vehicle maintenance for them. Of that number, half of them seek out professional service.

58% of those who do seek out professional service said they don’t have the knowledge to confidently perform maintenance tasks. Brand familiarity plays a large role in their decision of what shop to choose, with 57% saying it impacts where they decide to go.

Consumers are also willing to pay more for high quality motor oil–specifically, 63% said it was something they would pay more for to extend the lifespan of their vehicle.
