Stellantis Faces More Penalty Fees Over U.S. Fuel Economy Standards

July 23, 2024
After some vehicles were found to not meet standards last year, other model years are being hit with penalties from NHTSA.

Stellantis has paid out $190.7 million in civil penalties for failing to abide by federal fuel economy standards, and now faces an additional $459.7 million in outstanding penalties, reports Reuters.

The penalties were first paid earlier this year, in March and May, according to government documents obtained by Reuters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Stellantis have both confirmed the amount in outstanding penalties.

The automaker last year paid $235.5 million for violating fuel economy standards in 2018 and 2019 model year vehicles, and another $156.6 million for 2016 and 2017 model years.

The most recent penalties are for vehicles from model years 2019 and 2020, though Stellantis has argued that it predates the company’s origin in 2021.
