This holiday season will be the second-highest year for road travel since AAA began keeping track, according to a news release.
Between Dec. 23 and Jan. 1, 115.2 million travelers are expected to travel 50 miles or more, with almost 104 million of those travelers driving. It marks the second-highest year for travel since AAA began keeping track in 2000, coming after 2019, which saw 108 million drivers.
Compared to last year, the number of drivers this holiday season is a 1.8% increase from 2022. The price of gas is slated to be equal to or less than what it was last year as well, making it easier for many to afford.
The busiest days on the road will be Dec. 23 and Dec. 28, according to INRIX. Dec. 30 will also see an increase in traffic as people return home from their destinations or travel for New Year’s. INRIX Transportation Analyst Bob Pishue said that major metro areas will see typical delay times doubled, especially in Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington, DC.
“More Americans are investing in travel, despite the cost, to make memories with loved ones and experience new places,” said AAA Travel Senior Vice President Paula Twidale.
