Va. Shop and Police Department Host Catalytic Converter Event

Dec. 13, 2022

The Fairfax County Police Crime Prevention Unit and G&C Tire and Auto Service hosted an event to apply free anti-theft labels to catalytic converters.

Dec. 13, 2022—The Fairfax County Police Crime Prevention Unit and G&C Tire and Auto Service hosted an anti-theft event for catalytic converters over the weekend.

According to WUSA 9, Virginia residents local to the area were able to get free anti-theft labels applied to their catalytic converters. G&C installed these labels, which have an individualized code and the URL of the International Security Register. The label "will break into pieces if an attempt is made to remove it," according to WUSA 9. A fluid used to etch the metal is also applied to the label itself, that way if the label is removed the information will still be on the catalytic converter.

G&C Tire and Auto Service is located in Chantilly. The event was held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and appointments were not necessary. The Fairfax County Police Department saw 280 reported catalytic converter thefts from Jan. through March 2022. There were only 15 reported thefts during that same timeframe in 2021.
