Safety Inspections No Longer Required in Texas—McKinney Quick Lube Owner is Concerned
As of this week, vehicle safety inspections are no longer required in the state of Texas, prompting concern from a McKinney quick lube owner, reports CBS News.
Alexi Kavrazonis, owner of Wash Guys Lube Auto Center, does anywhere from 25 to 40 state inspections a day at his shop. He isn’t a fan of the elimination of safety inspections—not just for the impact it has on his business, but concern over driver safety.
“I didn't like it... not for the seven dollars that it cost the consumer but for the safety concern,” said Kavrazonis.
Though State Senator Bob Hall, who sponsored the bill eliminating Texas’ safety inspection requirement, doesn’t share this view.
“It has no purpose and has no useful benefit,” Hall has stated. “Windshield wipers don't cause accidents, and it's a stretch to say a turn signal would cause an accident.”
But as someone who makes vehicles road safe for a living, Kavrazonis realizes the real danger posed by neglecting essential routine maintenance. Though people are able to be pulled over for something a police officer notices, like a signal light that’s out, what a passerby can observe in passing is limited. Factors such as bad oil or tires will make the difference between safety and harm.
“You could have a car next to you, the tires are bald, especially when it's raining. He won't be able to stop on time. There are a lot of concerns,” explained Kavrazonis.
