Owners of certain General Motors vehicles may be eligible for reimbursement following the settlement of a class action lawsuit alleging excessive oil consumption, according to Top Class Actions.

The initial lawsuit filed in September 2018 claimed that model year 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles with 2.4-liter Ecotec engines contained a defect leading to a high volume of oil being consumed, and owners having to replace oil more as a result. Specifically, the issue stemmed from defective piston rings.

Two other class action lawsuits with similar claims followed, and the $42 million settlement agreement extends to all three of these suits.

Those who purchased or leased a new or used 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2013 Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain with a 2.4 liter Ecotec engine are included in the settlement class, with some exceptions, such as those who filed claims related to the suit in support of GM.

Owners of 2010–2012 vehicles will be eligible for a free replacement of pistol assemblies at a dealership, and class members who have already paid for repairs may file to receive reimbursement of expenses.
