Modern Tire Pros has worked with North Platte Public and North Platte Catholic Schools for three years to give back to the community through $30 donated to the district foundations with each oil change. This year, they changed the event from NEBRASKAland Days to the cooler weather during the school year.
Thursday, proceeds went to the North Platte Public Schools Foundation. Judy Jones, who owns the repair shop and neighboring car wash with her husband, Gary, said by the end of lunchtime Thursday, they had about 40 people get their oil changed — that $1,200 raised, along with donations were given to NPPSF during a meal provided by NebraskaLand National Bank and Rick Windham.
An oil change at Modern Tire Pros starts at $36.99, said Kent Kugler, general manager, with almost all of that going to schools. Jones said they gave around $6,000 last year to both districts.
Funds generated through the event will go to NPPSF’s “Prepared to Learn” program, said Heather Halligan, executive director. The program helps bridge the barriers to learning that children may face, such as needing school supplies or glasses.
“[It helps] so that they are on a level playing field,” Halligan said.
Kugler said the event is a good way to bring the business and community together. Sometimes, he said people will wait on getting oil changes for the opportunity to support their schools.
“The families really come around,” Kugler said.
Today, money will be raised to support North Platte Catholic Schools. Oil changes can be done from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Modern Tire Pros, 1402 S. Jeffers St.
